The Chilean spirit

Beside the destructive shocks in 1906, Chile has experienced many other earthquakes, and so have other regions local to the country. For instance, in December 1867, natural disasters striked the West Indies, Porto Rico's city- St. Domingo and left considerable damages. The hurricane and earthquake caused the sea to rise, sweeping through half of the city. Ten thousand people lost their lives. More than 3000 buildings were ruined or damaged. No matter how much effort people put into protecting the city, humans cannot avoid the devastating power of natural disasters.

The more we look at the destruction wrought by natural disasters, the more we feel vulnerable as human beings. Still, like Chileans who accepted their hometown as a place with frequently dangerous shocks and live along with them, humans eventually adapt and find ways to protect ourselves. From our persistence through such disasters, we learn one thing: we can have faith in humans’ ability to overcome any challenges imposed by nature.
